Sorry, millennials — Gen Z is trying to replace avocado toast with “Tomato Ice Toast.”
And some say they’re trying too hard to be cool.
Gen Z TikTokkers have wowed viewers with their latest controversial concoctions using shaved and frozen vegetables to make delicious granitas.
Granita – a simple shaved ice – has long been enjoyed by Italians, usually made by freezing fruit, vegetable or spice juices, sometimes adding simple syrup and crushing the frozen block into a bowl to eat.
Lemon, cinnamon, jasmine and espresso are some of the most common flavors found on menus around the world.
However, Gen Z foodies have given the sweet treat a fresh twist by freezing whole fruits and vegetables and slathering them on top of toast and burrata or mixing nuts together for an iceberg salad.
In one of the most viral videos of delicious granitas, chef Eitan Bernath grates a chunk of a frozen tomato onto an open ball of burrata.
He then drizzled olive oil and balsamic vinegar on top, finishing with salt and pepper and a sprig of basil.
Bernath seems to approve of his snack with a wide eye.
However, viewers had different opinions about the creation.
“I don’t know how I feel after this,” read the top comment, while another labeled it “REVOLUTIONARY.”
Some viewers thought the frozen version of a tomato, basil and burrata salad was “brilliant,” but others simply said, “No.”
The celebrity chef has posted more traditional recipes, including watermelon, pineapple, mango and orange – but he’s continued to get creative.
He recently posted a clip of a “frozen shaved tomato salad with cucumber,” made by grating a frozen cucumber, tomato, and red onion in a bowl, then tossing the pieces with olive oil, lemon, salt and pepper.
Bernath admitted it “may sound absolutely crazy” but insisted it “turned out to be a deliciously delicious granita”.
“Is that frozen salad or ice cream salad?” someone asked.
“That way, I would definitely be a salad person,” noted another.
But then again, not everyone was ready to make a bowl for themselves.
“One question…WHY?” one person commented.
TikTok foodie Mads, who goes by @cripanddip online, recently posted a clip claiming she “had to try” the trend which she said looks “so refreshing”.
In the video, Mads cuts a slice of sourdough bread, rubs it with a clove of garlic, spreads a ball of burrata on the toast, then grates a small pile of frozen tomatoes and peaches on top.
She tops the dish with a little white balsamic vinegar and olive oil, a few basil leaves and a sprinkling of salt and pepper.
The foodie was skeptical of the trendy treat and complained that the cold vegetables bothered her sensitive teeth – but overall she was pleasantly surprised.
Mads noted that the tomato flavor was very subtle and admitted that she would still prefer one pan con tomato A piece of garlic toast topped with blended tomatoes, olive oil, salt and pepper.
“I like it,” she decided after a few bites.
The creative concoctions don’t seem to have gotten beyond social media and don’t appear to have been added to any menus this summer — but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen yet.
