Is it a hacker or a hacker job?
Lara, who goes by @larad_official on TikTok, discovered an unusual kitchen hack her mother uses to clean a large batch of fruits and vegetables.
“I’m trying to wash my fruits and vegetables in the dishwasher,” the content creator’s mom admits online. “Why not?”
In the one-minute clip uploaded on June 1, Lara captures her mother, who has not released her name, loading the KitchenAid dishwasher with some fruit and vegetables.
The dishwasher, which has three tray levels, was loaded with celery, carrots, tomatoes, apples, limes, oranges, lemons, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, peppers and dragon fruit.
“This is new for me”, Lara wrote in the viral clip with 4.1 million views.
Her mother claims that the dishwasher isn’t just for dishes; can be used to clean her products with white distilled vinegar so she doesn’t have to wash it herself.
Lara is shocked to discover that her mother has run the rinse cycle more than once to get her vegetables and fruits fresh and clean.
“I like it [needs] more cleaning because so many people touch it,” her mother said.
She believes that fruits and vegetables need a deeper cleaning in the dishwasher than dishes that only her family touches.
The fruit washing expert uses cold water to rinse the items, but her daughter couldn’t understand how this hack could work.
In a follow-up video, Lara interrupts the dishwasher’s cycle to test the water temperature, which turns out to be cold.
“When I say I believe, I mean, trust me, I know what I’m doing,” she scolded her daughter.
Lara revealed the final results of washing the fruit showing how the produce came out dry and clean. The items were so pristine, her mother even pulled a Bugs Bunny crunch out of the carrot.
After watching the TikTok clip, many people on the internet believe and trust the fruit washing hack.
“Your mom just created a trend for lazy people and we’re in love!” exploded an observer.
“Wow! This lady is amazing. Thinking outside the box or dishwasher,” one person commented.
“A fruit washer?! I’ve been doing it wrong all along,” one joker wrote.
“My countertop dishwasher actually has a setting and basket for washing fruit!” added another.
“I need to see results,” one TikToker asked. “This could be a game changer.”
Meanwhile, Matthew Taylor, MCIEH, CEnvH, senior manager and head of consulting for the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF), maintains that while dishwasher washing is convenient, using the traditional hand washing method is safer.
“Washing any food item in the dishwasher, including fruits and vegetables, can lead to serious food safety risks and is not recommended,” Taylor previously told The Kitchn.
“Even if you wash produce without detergent, chemical residues can permeate fruits and vegetables, as well as leftover debris and dirt that can remain in the dishwasher.”
